Learn With Every Experience
With every band rehearsal, every recording session, every performance, every audition, you should be able to learn something from it. I suggest after every session or performance you should make a list of at least five things that were good. These things might include how you pulled off that really tricky chord change or solo, or how the bass player and the drummer really locked together, or even how you got a great crowd response. Then make a list of five things that either were not good or things that could be improved. These things can include anything from how you missed the chord changes in a song, or how the drummer kept slowing down or even the fact that the bass player forgot to put a new battery in his compressor pedal. These things can be about your own performance or the way the band performed (or didn’t).
Now, celebrate the great things that happened. Recognize that there were good things happening. Next, find at least two or three ways that you can work on improving the things that need to be improved. Practice that solo even more, work with the drummer and a metronome to help him with his timing, carry spare batteries, strings or cables in case anyone needs something. By regularly doing this, you will be developing the habits that all great leaders have. You will always progress. Each session and performance will be better than the last. Not just by a little, but by a huge margin. Try it and watch what happens.
